How to Practice Social Distancing and Still be Social!

Social distancing video chat

Here are a few suggestions on how to stay social during these unsettling times! Social isolation is detrimental to one’s mental health and wellbeing, so it’s important to stay connected with the world outside, even if it’s a “virtual” connection.

Here are some ideas for things to do to make the most of your day!

  • Read! If you don’t have any desirable books to read at the moment, download a bunch of e-books and audiobooks instead! You can drag your friends together (virtually) to start an online book club and video call each other to discuss. Get a Plano Public Library card, if you don’t have one already, and access e-books and other resources for free.
  • Take a virtual museum tour. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is one of several museums offering online tours as an alternative to in-person visits.
  • Experience nature… while keeping 6 feet from other people. Find an area where you won’t encounter crowds of people. Fresh air is good for the body.
  • Start birdwatching. Find out what species nest near you, get those binoculars and download a birdwatching map.
  • Go on a solo run or walk (or take your furry friend along). Exercise is good for you and your immune system. Remember to observe social distancing!
  • Video chat (A lot!) Skype with family and friends. Make sure you’re still making connections with those you care about. It’s always a treat to see a face while chatting with loved-ones.
  • Meditate. Empty your mind and center yourself. Relax.
