Keep Your Home Clean and Rodent Free

Rat in yard BIG

Now is a great time to ensure your neighborhood is clean. Check out these tips to maintaining a tidy area to reduce the risk of rats and other rodents.

  • Dispose of trash properly. Rats like to rummage and feed on discarded food waste. Ensure your trash is disposed of in the right place.
  • Secure your containers. Make sure your trash and recycling containers are not damaged and the lid closes completely after disposing of trash. Open containers are a food source to rats and other animals.
  • Don’t leave food outside. Leaving pet food outside for extended periods of time attracts animals.
  • Inspect your home for animals. Small rats only need an opening the size of a quarter to burrow inside. Inspect your walls and attic space for openings and small animals. Openings are commonly found on eaves, around windows and in landscaping around concrete pads and sheds.
  • Inspect your yard for animals. Rats and mice use gaps between lumber piles, plastic containers and other materials as shelter. Bring those items inside or dispose of them. Firewood stacked outside should be kept at least 12 inches off the ground to prevent animals from sheltering in the stack.
  • Check your faucets. Ensure leaky faucets are repaired and your yard is not overwatered. This helps to keep rats from sheltering nearby.
