[ARCHIVED] Prepare Your Visitors for New Plano Municipal Center Protocols

Bldg Entry protocols Jan2022

Plano Municipal Center fully opened to the public last June. Since then, we’ve reviewed and examined public access to the building to balance providing a secure environment for Team Plano while effectively conducting business and serving our community. Based on our review, you will see several changes at Plano Municipal Center (MC).

You may have noticed an increased police presence at the facility. Our Plano Police teammates now patrol public areas of city hall from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Other changes effective as of Monday, January 10: (see video below)

  • The temporary department drop-off slots in the main lobby were removed.
  • The Action Center is is now called the Information Center.
  • The separations between public spaces and staff spaces remain.
  • All employees must wear I.D. badges(visibly) at all times.
    • The lower-level basement and third floor still require badge access at the elevator. External visitors to the lower-level and third floor must be escorted by an employee. Departments on these floors need to provide an escort for visitors. Let guests know in advance what to expect when visiting the building.
    • The first and second floor have public elevators access, but require badge access at either the suite doors or within the suite. Departments on these floors need to be available to escort walk-ins to their suite for customer service.
    • Staff only entrances require badge access.

Additional updates, coming soon:

  • Signage will be added to all Municipal Center public entrances for easy reference for staff and easy identification by visitors. The four public entrances will be identified by number and location as follows:
    • Entrance 1: entry with revolving door that leads to main lobby and elevators
    • Entrance 2: entry with two sets of double doors across from Building Inspections
    • Entrance 3: entry from K Avenue on west side, adjacent to Council Chambers
    • Entrance 4: entry from north side (with parking lot), adjacent to Council Chambers

If a visitor follows you onto the elevator, ask what floor/department they are visiting. If the answer is “the lower level or third floor,” politely let them know departments located on these floors require a staff escort from the lobby. Show them to the wall phone next to the lobby elevator to call the department and point out the nearby seating area where they can wait.

If you encounter a lost visitor in the building, find out where they need to be. If the visitor is on a badge-access only floor without an escort, please take them back to the first floor and call the appropriate department or ask the Information Center for help.

More details next week in Thursday’s Team Plano email.
